Transformation of a chocolate factory into apartments

This was a two stage project in a former MacRoberston chocolate factory. The first apartment was 100m2 and constructed for a working couple. The idea was to create intimate spaces while maintaining the open-ness of a warehouse and maintaining features such as the exposed steel beams and wooden trusses of the 4 metre high ceilings. A bedroom and bathroom were cleverly built into a mezzanine and an L-shaped living, meals and kitchen area were designed with a large walk-in pantry.

The adjoining apartment was bought when the couple’s second child arrived, to add another 60m2 to the floorspace. Two additional bedrooms were created with a laundry, bathroom and additional living area for the children to play in. The 2 apartments were designed in such as way that they could be linked or separated by large industrial sliding doors.
